An outstanding cook known in Bremen and the Ghanaian community in Germany as "Mama Ataa" or the abbreviated version "Mataa” to which the restaurant has been named.
Mataa has been catering for private events for the past 15 years due to her passion and love putting smile on people’s faces through her cooking.
Mataa was born and raised in Ghana, as a child she unfortunately lost her birth mother prematurely and had to be raised by her auntie. She grew up with her siblings in a household with over twenty children where she assisted her auntie in cooking daily for all twenty children. Through this she developed the love and passion for cooking as this brought her happiness each time the family were all well fed.
To help the family financially, at the age of six, she helped out at the family local snack bar (usually referred to as Chop Bar in Ghana) as a waiter. This helped her in understanding the business aspect in running a business, at the age of 24 she had raised enough money and was able to open her own grocery store which catered to her entire neighbourhood by providing them with various African delicacies.
As the bread winner of the family, she immigrated to Germany years later in search of a better lifestyle for her and the family. She carried her passion for cooking and continued exactly where she left off by venturing into the catering business.
In addition to her private catering services, she worked in the cafeteria of the University of Bremen for 20 years where she catered for all student.
This helped her improve her existing knowledge, skill and techniques in cooking allowing her to experiment by blending her West African style of cooking with the central European cuisine hence the unique taste in Mataa’s Kitchen.
